Apparel: Re-Innovative Project

Re-Innovative
Reusing and Recycling to Create
For the Re-Innovative project, sophomores in the Apparel Design program were asked to use non-fabric, recycled, used, or thrown away materials to construct a garment. I chose to use long lengths of uncut shoelace and plastic streamers or tinsel, both of which I had obtained from the Rhode Island Recycling Center. Visually, I wanted to play with light and darkness, as well as the reflectiveness of the tinsel. Also, I strove to create my own alternative textile out of the materials. Firstly, I knotted the shoe lace to form panels of fish netting. Then, I attached them strategically to create a base that was reminiscent to fabric draped on the bias, allowing the garment to hug and to flow around the body. Finally, I wove in the streamers experimenting with the placement of black, silver, and holographic ones. Model: Nina Paisarnsrisin.
